Thinking as a function

Thinking is the hardest work there is, which is probably the reason why so few engage in it.

Henry Ford

Times are changing. Even though you have the brightest of the ideas, investors and consumers are looking at the fact that it is not about only solving the problem, but reaching the consumers.

As entrepreneurs, we need to embrace the fact that solving the right problem is just not the only way, but what becomes important is how we message and help our consumers understand the solutions. There are two aspects which we need to consider seriously before embarking on the journey of building solutions – First, we need to understand the view of traditional logic and secondly, we have to employ the view of association theory.

What do these mean?

The view of traditional logic provides us the understanding of the problem and the kind of solutions which have traditionally been accepted by consumers. When you identify the problem, depict how consumers have accepted solutions to similar kind of problems earlier and design the solutions based on the principals of approachability.

Let us look at a simple case study of an online grocery store in India. Traditionally, the way we shopped groceries was to go to a Supermarket or a local vegetable market and purchased our daily needs. Over the period of time, it was acceptable for us to call the local grocery shop and have them deliver to us. As times changed, now, we do not even call the local grocery store, but open a website/app and select all the groceries we need and they get delivered home.

The progression happened step-by-step. First, consumers were accustomed to not requiring to go to the shop to select their goods, and then slowly, consumers have been introduced to the concept of shopping in more than one store and select what they like.

When you are designing a solution, if it is a progressive step to the daily workflow, it becomes easier for consumers to understand and use the solution appropriately.

Look at how banking has changed in India. Initially, it was ATM Cards, then Net Banking and now, API Banking, making it easier to send money by just using a mobile number. The transition was step-by-step.

This does not mean solutions cannot be radical. Few years ago, SpaceX said that they would put people on Mars and asked interested people to sign up and after their selection, they would undergo rigorous training before they are sent to mars. This is radical progression and the company was looking at not many people in their first batch, but a select few. Since the world is definitely made up of early adapters, they got their numbers.

It all depends on how you wish solve a problem and how you want to make your clients utilise your solution. Either make it a progressive approach or a radical one. But, before you begin solving a problem, spend time on understanding the progression of the domain/industry and illustrate to yourself how things have changed over the period of time. This makes it easier for you to design, educate your consumer and implement the solutions.

In view of association theory, what you would understand is the consumer behaviour. You can use various techniques and methodologies to understand this – Consumer interviews, survey’s, having conversations with potential users etc. These methodologies will help you understand what the user is looking forward as a progressive next step. To contradict this, Henry Ford famously said, “If I asked people what they wanted, they would ask for faster horses”. So, we should be very specific in what we are looking for and understand the trends and the industry before we even begin solving the problem.

The objective of this post is to help aspiring innovators/entrepreneurs ideate and provide a framework for the same.

Embracing emotions

Quite often when we speak with our family, friends and colleagues, we hear “Don’t get so emotional” or “Don’t be emotional”.

What is being emotional?
If you search for emotional on google, this is the first result you will get.

adjective
adjective: emotional
1. relating to a person’s emotions.
“gaining emotional support from relatives”
synonyms:
spiritual, inner, psychic, psychological, of the heart
“their emotional needs are often ignored”

antonyms:
material
2. arousing or characterized by intense feeling.
“an emotional speech”
synonyms:
poignant, moving, touching, affecting, powerful, stirring, emotive, heart-rending, heartbreaking, heart-warming, soul-stirring, uplifting, impassioned, dramatic; More

antonyms:
dry, unfeeling, emotionless
3. (of a person) having feelings that are easily excited and openly displayed.
“he was a strongly emotional young man”
synonyms:
passionate, feeling, hot-blooded, warm, ardent, fervent, excitable, temperamental, melodramatic, tempestuous, overcharged, responsive; More

antonyms:
apathetic, cold

Look at the meaning of the word. In all the three meanings, you will see that emotions display your passion, compassion, your inner feeling. Of course, there are other meanings to the word which do not showcase the positivity, like melodramatic, temperamental etc.

I have heard this term quite a few times in my life. Every time I heard this word, it was not sounding right for me. Then, I started researching more on this word.

* Being emotional is a very good trait. However, one should understand the context of the situation where emotions are being displayed. For instance, road rage is an attribute of being emotional, showing your inner feelings of anger and frustration. This is not a positive attribute.
* Visionaries and Leaders are definitely passionate and emotional about what they do and what they believe in. This is a positive attribute.

Now, whenever I hear someone saying that I am being emotional, I take a step back and draw a mental picture of why the person said that and what attribute am I displaying. If it is regarding what I do, what I believe in and what I stand for, then I completely ignore the feedback. This feedback is coming because the other person does not share my passion and he/she is only trying to subdue my conversation by saying this. There is no point in continuing the conversation with the person. I walk away in silence.

The second instance is where we let our ego play. Even though our gut says that we are going wrong somewhere, we try to support ourselves in what we say.

All leaders who have shaped the world have displayed public emotions – From Mahatma Gandhi to Rabindranath Tagore to Steve Jobs to Sir Richard Branson to Bill Gates and the list only continues.

Being emotional is a very strong attribute of being a true leader. However, balancing the act between positive (which comes passion) and negative (which comes with ego) emotions strengthens the personality of the leader.

Empathy – Selling from your heart

We as human’s need empathy at every phase of our life. When we conceptualize our idea, believing in it and embarking on the journey is the first step, but the most important aspect is to understand the end user of our product/service/offering. Empathy is the one single key attribute of sales which makes or breaks the idea. If we do not understand the viewpoint of our end user, all our efforts go in vein.

My classic example is how the premium brands treat their consumers when compared to regular shops. Walk into any premium brand showroom and even though you might not be a hot customer, they treat you with a lot of empathy. They understand your needs and help you make a decision.

Once, I walked into a luxury car showroom with a friend. He was seriously considering it and since I am an automobile enthusiast, he asked me to join him. We entered and we were greeted well by the reception. My friend told the reception what he was looking for and the next 30 minutes went by walking us through all the offerings they have. As we were being guided around, I was looking at their products and had quite a few questions for them. At one point, I was mentioning the sales person how I saw one of their advertisements long ago and how much I admired the capabilities of one of their product. He insisted that I drove that car. I mentioned very clearly that whatever I do, I cannot afford that car in the near future and he is wasting his time walking me through the details of the car. What he mentioned left a lasting impression on me “Sir, you love this car and you might not be buying it today, but am sure, very soon you will come to drive home one of these”. My day was made. It was not anything else, but what the sales guy said made me feel very good and gave me a feeling of hope that one day, I would definitely buy it. He need not say that or make me feel good for two reasons – I was not considering to buy anything that day (It was my friend) and second, he need not spend the time to share details with me. But, still, he did.

As an entrepreneur, we should constantly practice empathy. Because, only when we make our clients feel good, will we stand a chance to be successful and win the confidence of our client.

Is Apple losing it’s IQ?

Yesterday’s Apple event was not much awaited (let us be honest about it, at least I was not) and what apple fans are looking for is the 10th anniversary of iPhone next year. However, as with each year, we did look forward to seeing if there are any pathbreaking innovations coming out this year.

The two major features which were predicted came true – a dual camera and removing the headphone jack. Are they really path breaking?

Is this really innovation? Let us go back into a little history. When Steve Jobs was at the helm of Apple, suddenly there were outbursts of innovation beginning with iPod to iPhone to iPad. The rhythm continued till about 2010 and then things started to slow down. Except for the change in the size of the screen, not many new innovations have come out from Apple. Every year, the only dialogue you hear is “the biggest thing ever happened to iPhone since it was born”. Definitely. This is an improvement from the previous version, but not a major change or new feature coming in except that they have started to bring out more and more accessories which will generate alternative revenues because we know iPhone sales are slowing down.

Innovation Quotient
It is important to understand at this juncture that there is a cycle of innovation and all companies have to go through it. There is a limitation – in thinking, in market acceptability and accessibility.

Apple over the last 15 years has bought out products which had a different perspective. This increased the hype of their offerings and together with Steve’s obsession for beautification and practicality (read design thinking), Apple products have changed the way the world looks at technology. Competition evolved. Even though not many are able to match/catch up to the beautification (many companies are coming close these days), there is a tough competition which has evolved. With the IP protection and patent laws, Apple was able to withhold many of its innovations and keep them in-house. Alternatives evolved.

When disruptive innovation happens, the level of hype comes down. We take the time to understand the long-term impact of a new feature/functionality. This has to be playing in as time goes by. Let us go back a little into history and look at iPad. iPad initially came in as an offering between a smartphone and personal computer. People predicted that there is no need of this offering and there is no long-term impact, but today, we look at devices like iPad and tablets as a serious alternative to a personal computer because it is easy to carry around and worked with. This lead to bringing in lighter and more compact laptops. It took a while to accept the concept of iPad and tablets, but now, all of us are using them.

During the latency period companies like apple cash in on the current needs. Look at the new iWatch, yes, good load of new aspects came in, water resistant, inbuilt GPS and ability to track your workouts, but bringing Pokemon to the watch is only going with the market craze and if they can add few bucks to their kitty by bringing this game to the watch, why not?

It is not all about Innovation all the time. It is very difficult to sustain the innovation business model. Companies need to offer best what their core is – for Apple, it is any of their products and we know they are very good.

IMHO, Apple’s Innovation Quotient has not come down. It is just that the hype level is coming down and this is a natural phenomenon. This will settle down and for a path breaking innovation to shake the markets to come in, will take a little while longer.

Thinking like a pro

Thinking is not art, but a skill which needs to be mastered.

In his book Outliers, author Malcolm Gladwell says that it takes 10,000 hours to master a skill. Winston Churchill once said, typically people think 2-4 hours a year and I practiced doing it each day and that is what got me here.

In today’s world of fast changing and adapting technology, only the one’s who practice thinking are making strides in every aspect of their lives. So, how do we begin thinking like a pro?

Thinking is the function of both the left and right brains. It needs constant practice and the will to make your thinking impactful. While the left brain focus’s on understanding the small picture, verbal communication, linear and logical thinking, positive emotions, math, and EQ; the right brain focus’s on understanding the big picture, non-verbal communication, IQ, math reasoning, information interpretation and negative emotions.

Thinking is a tight balancing act between the left and right brains. Like any other balance activities, even the brain needs to be taught and practiced thinking.

If we go with the statistics quoted by Churchill, we would not spend more than 240 hours thinking in our lifetime (3 Hours a year for 80 Years). For us to reach at least 50% of the mastery level, setting a goal of 10 years, we need to practice thinking 500 Hours a year. This translates to an average of 0.057 Hours each day, which is less than 20 minutes.

When you begin learning a 2 wheeler/4 wheeler, you focus on keeping the balance of the vehicle straight on the road while combining using the Accelerator, Brake, Clutch and the Gearbox. Initially, it would be difficult, but the more your practice, the easier it gets.

Similarly, thinking like a pro needs practice. Practicing a combination of activities will help sharpen our thinking. It is not mandatory that one understands every aspect of the functions of brain and practice them, but identifying the right combinations coupled with the passion helps better the chances of the thinking process.

Next time when you have to think about something, try a combination of the skills required and then your output will be much better than it was the last time.

Transitioning to be an Entrepreneur

Victor Hugo once said there is one thing stronger than all armies in the world, and that is an idea whose time has come. I believe in it.

Since my college days, I always wanted to do something on my own, I don’t know why. While in college I still remember selling Kirloskar UPS to companies from 3 PM – 7 PM as a part time job. Then I spent few months selling computer peripherals (Printer cartridges, print paper etc) on call. It started like that, but as life would make you change courses, I moved to the corporate world. Learnt a lot, met a lot of amazing and inspiring people who shaped my career and could see the world a bit too. All these taught me one new thing each day and helped me mould myself into a better person.

Three months ago, when I stepped out of my comfort zone of sitting in a wonderful office and doing the most passionate job I did for over 12 years, life came calling. I wanted to seriously focus and do something which will give me wings. Like everyone, I had quite a few ideas and I debated with myself wrote quite a few business plans, trashed a lot of paper, filled in few notepads with my scribblings, gulped quite a few beers unable to decide.

Then I decided to stop banging my head against the wall and wanted to start with one idea which came to me each day for at least two weeks. This happened to be ADURO.

ADURO in Spanish means to kindle, to set fire. The A in the logo is replaced by the ^ symbol. This represents the exponentiation. Why the ^ symbol? That is because at ADURO we believe in creating offerings which will help you achieve more for the efforts you put in. Who does not like it?

Building the Healthcare ecosystem

Over the last two years, Healthcare has been on an exponential growth. Previously, Healthcare was limited to professionals who have been in the field and others stayed away from it even though they thought they could solve the problems. However, things changed. There are many non-Healthcare professionals who have been in the technology space who are partnering with people from other streams to solve and address the Healthcare needs.

Today, there is more than $100 Billion riding on Healthcare technology alone in India with expectations of it growing to $280 Billion by 2020.

What we have today is the opportunity to identify the pain points and build a workable solution around it. This provides the opportunity to look at aspects which were non-existent earlier. For instance, with the advent of apps being available for finding Doctors and medical services in a particular area, provided an opportunity for people to explore nearest medical services and get just in time help.

With Doctor’s consultations being available on Skype, it is easy now to find a specialist and set up an appointment and speak to them in detail. The list goes on.

What we need to focus is to build sustainable models which can be replicated across. Moving away from the core infrastructure problems such as Doctor:Patient ratio has not even started with the advent of technology, but on a long run, this can be addressed.

Startup’s focusing on addressing Healthcare should understand what is the existing infrastructure and how we can utilise it to build our offering around it. In simple words, building mutually inclusive offerings is the need of the hour.

How wearable’s are improving your health

Wearables have been fast gaining importance. Fitness trackers and Smart watches play the most pivotal role.
With more and more people beginning to use them, there is a lot of data with the manufacturers which can be used for varied research activities. In fact, using an fitness tracker helps one to monitor his/her fitness levels and motivate them. For instance, I keep tracking my steps per day and give my best to ensure I reach my goal each night before I sleep. It has become more of psychological to feel the vibration on my device when I reach my goal.
What should happen next is that this data should be made available for the end user to share with his Physician so that he can be advised on how he should be working to keep his health and maintain fitness levels.
With the Internet of Things slowly gaining important and many devices being connected and all the data collected being consolidated, research is improving to provide information on how one can improve/maintain his/her health.
I am optimistic that this is the new norm of manning health and beginning of building a healthy lifestyle yourself.
