Kindle ships Internationally

Yesterday, I was showing my new gadget to my boss and he mentioned that Kindle is now being shipped Internationally. For a second, I was not convinced because just last week I checked on their website and there was no information. Immediately I logged on to Amazon and found that they are shipping Kindle Internationally. Chose my country of location as India and they have provided some information regarding shipping and few technical details…

Need to figure out few questions now…

  • Which service provider will I latch on to for buying books?
  • How come there are no service charges/connectivity fees for wireless connectivity? I am sure the service provider should charge some money, because technology is definitely not free in business.
  • Can I subscribe to all newspapers in America from here? That would be really surprising 🙂 If this is correct, then the world has really become flat…
  • I am sure I need to pay in Dollars, but will books from Indian publishers be included?
  • Pricing would be a real tough touch point. In India, the publishing costs are definitely less and we can books (legal prints with ISBN) for less cost.

If anyone has purchased / purchasing in India, please leave a comment here and I would like to touch base with you….

Quick Look into the Sony PRS-600 BC Touch Edition

I wrote a post earlier comparing the two major eBook Readers available. I compared the Amazon Kindle and Sony PRS 700.

Three days back, I purchased the Sony PRS 600 BC Touch Edition. Well, it is an impressive device and I am head over heals for it. The quality of the device is very nice. The reading comfort (Font and Display) are very neat and it gives an impression that you are reading an original book.

Key features which I just adore:

  • It is very east to start using. No complications in the setup.
  • Navigation is pretty neat and intuitive.
  • Ability to organize various kinds of reads. For example, I created folders for articles, books, and subjects.
  • Can download and store any PDF/DOC (Other standard formats are also supported) documents, so need to printing an important document for reference.
  • Ability to write notes. You want to highlight a word/sentence/paragraph and take notes? Just use the stylus and start writing. Notes are stored separately and referenced back to your document.
  • When you stop reading, it will remember the page the next time you want to go back.
  • In built dictionary.

What else can I ask for?

7 positive points and do you think there will be any reason not to own one? Yes, the below two will make you think hundred times if you do not live in the US/Canada.

  • You cannot buy books from the eBook store. You will need to depend a lot on free eBooks.
  • You will not have support in your home country/location.

The above two are justified points for you to make the decision now. When I tried to purchase a book today, it did not allow me and I called the customer care (US). They mentioned that I will not be able to buy books as I do not have a US Credit Card. I was really disappointed (pissed off is the correct word) and wanted to return back the device this evening. I even sent an email to their customer care (feedback@ebookstore.sony.com)

Hello,

I have researched and found that the Sony PRS 600 Touch Edition is one of the best available for me to use and hence bought the same few days back. I am visiting United States currently and would be returning back to India next week.

When I purchased the device, the sales person did not tell me that the eBook store works only in the US. Now, when i wanted to buy a book, it did not allow me, because I do not hold a United States / Canada Credit Card.

I am just writing this email to let you know that this sucks big time. I did not expect that an organization like Sony could differentiate its customers based on region.

With a broken heart, I am returning the device which is simply useless for me.

Next time around, invent something which the world can use.

Appreciate your understanding…

After searching for sometime, found a good book store which sells eBooks – www.eBooks.com. I tried searching for few latest releases and they are available. However, the prices are not low. You will most probably pay the same price as you pay for the book. I wanted to try purchasing a book and did so. I downloaded and could copy the book to my device.

Now that I can buy eBooks, I am keeping the device. Else, would have to definitely return back without any use.

I do understand that there are business constraints for these manufacturers and publishers, but when this world has become a global village, they should have different strategy for ensuring Innovations help each and everyone.

Yesterday, ran into an issue where the system software not recognizing the device. I called the Customer Care and their executive did try to help me, but she could not. I researched and found out that their eBook Library software for the computer does not work on Windows 7. Another bummer. Again, after trying to locate and solve the compatibility problem, I could connect back the device and till now, it works good.

You need any help with the device, feel free to write to me or leave a comment.

Sony PRS 700 Vs Amazon Kindle

Well .. Well, I might not have extensive technical research on the two e-book readers in the market, but have done a decent study. Off late, I am getting more passionate to buy one of them as I can save space at home. Today, its fine, but when I think of life ahead, I will need to move to electronic book reader, rather than keep buying books and fill the house…

Currently, there are only two e-book readers available- Sony PRS 700 and Amazon Kindle (as I know, and if you know more, please let me know) and both of them have their own monopoly. Binding their customers to themselves and not providing much of flexibility. Also, I tried quite a few online book stores, and no one sells e-books 🙁 What if i just want to buy an e-book and read it on my laptop? Unfortunately, no one can help me with this.

I live in India and so, my options are much narrow. Well, for ease of supporting my current decision, look at the table below.

The above prices are on the day I compiled this post (not posted).

Guess what I have closed in as of now? None other than the PRS700. Why? It is simple, even though Kindle provides more flexibility, there is no point in buying it because Amazon does not allow me to buy a book, download into my Amazon account and then transfer to the reader. I can order on the web, but the book will be directly delivered to the reader through the wireless and for this you need to be only in US. There is no point in discussing this gadget anymore.

Coming to PRS 700, this is not sold in India (also I checked with Sony India if they can bring it for me, but they bluntly refused). Here is the list of key differentiators as to why you need to buy PRS 700 if you in India…

  1. Sony e-Book store delivers to your account and you can transfer the book to your device through USB.
  2. You can also transfer PDF files easily.

After posting this post, I stumbbled upon few interesting links for e-Book readers, do check them out…

eBook's and eBook Reader

After a gap of more than 3 months, I am back to my blog. No reasons for the disturbance in updating my bolg, but just that every time I wanted to write, something was pulling me back. Today, I decided to write and wanted to start with something which interests me and also, might interest many others.

Recently, in June 2008, I moved my house and during the shift I realized how many books I collected over the last 3 and half years. I told the movers and packers that I would not need more than 10 big box’s for the move and after they packed everything, realized that 15 medium sized box’s are my books and print out’s of articles. I then realized that I need to do something urgently to control my book collection and started researching for eBook readers. Initially when I searched, the closest and the most interesting item I found was the Amazon Kindle. I spoke to Rajesh Jain after reading his blog post on the kindle. He mentioned that he was enjoying it and now, it is easier for carrying books rather than the traditional paperback or hardbound in his luggage while traveling. But, there is a hitch. This comes with a plan as Kindle comes with a CDMA Plan in the US to buy books online. As I don’t live in the US, I found this not so exciting.

Off-late, found few more eBook Readers on Wikipedia. Yesterday, I went to Target and found Sony eBook Reader and it was really attractive. The reviews were good, but I only had second thoughts because of the heavy price of $299 +Tax. While investing Rs.15,000+, I wanted to check various features and so, went slow before I brought it. Did some more research and found that few users of this machine had troubles opening PDF files. This device supports PDF, Doc files in common and many eBook formats (PDF, TXT, RTF, DOC, FB2, LRF, LRX, ePub, JPG, GIF, PNG, BMP, MP3, AAC w/o DRM) etc. It comes with inbuilt 200 MB internal storage space and expandable up to 16 GB with SD Memory.

Coming to the next aspect of my research, I wanted to check out how many titles of hardbound/paperback come in eBook format? There are few good sites which offer excellent collection – eBooks.com, Free eBooks.Net, e-Library.Net etc. However, almost all titles are double priced than the traditional paperback/hardbound. I didn’t expect this. Honestly, I was expecting the cost to be lesser because the cost of the paper used to print books including the ink is reduced. Unfortunately, all the titles I compared with traditional print and e Book format are double expensive than the print. I am a bit disappointed. However, I am sure that over the period of time, these will come down and hence postponed the purchase of eBook reader.

I think all of us must move towards ebooks and save planet by reducing the use of paper which controls the cutting of trees. It is a long way to go, but a small step is the beginning to a long journey.

If you find any interesting eBook readers, please share with all of us by posting a comment to this post.
